三七（Radix et Rhizoma Notoginseng）是我国传统医学中享誉盛名的中药材，具有散瘀止血，消肿定痛的功效，来源于五加科人参属植物三七（Panax notoginseng）的干燥根及根茎。

三七作为一味著名的伤科要药，最早出现于明代嘉靖至万历年间，具体记录书籍多有争议。明万历年（1576年）的《医门秘旨》载“三七草”曰“其本出广西，七叶三枝，故此为名。”明朝著名药物学家李时珍在其《本草纲目》记录“三七”为南方军队的金创要药。《增订伪药条辨》《药物出产辨》中记载三七广西镇安府和广西田州为地道，今即广西那坡和百色等地，所以三七又名田七。清道光（1821-1850）年之后，三七的野生资源逐渐匮乏，由于药用需求的扩大，广西西南部与云南东南部相毗邻的地区陆续开始发展种植，现代云南文山州和红河州已成为三七药材的主产地，以云南文山为道地，行销全国。目前三七药材均为栽培品，野生居群未见明确的记录和报道，已被IUCN评估为野外灭绝（EW）。

三七药材外皮青黄、内里青黑而又质地坚硬，传统经验称之为“铜皮铁骨”。三七的药材商品分为春三七和冬三七，春三七因在生长期约6-7月间去除花葶，9月采收，所得药材质重坚实，品质上乘，而冬三七为留种繁育，10月采收，所得药材干瘪松泡，品质较差。

三七中以达玛烷型四环三萜类皂苷为代表的的化学成分是三七药理活性重要的物质基础，其对血液、心脑血管，神经、代谢、免疫调节等系统均有显著的作用，以三七为组方药材进入《国家基本药物名录》的制剂约20余种，除此之外，近年来，以三七为原料的保健品开发也具有一定规模。

以三七、人参(P. ginseng)、竹节参(P. japonicus)为代表的人参属植物均为重要的药用植物，人参属也是东亚——北美间断分布的代表属，在植物系统演化研究中具有科学意义，由于人参属植物自身对生长环境要求较为苛刻，人为破坏和过度利用导致人参属植物资源破坏较为严重，科学利用是保护人参属植物资源的重要途径，对于三七而言，一般采用坡地开荒种植，并搭建遮阴网（天棚）和覆盖稻草（地棚），种植周期较长，需3至7年才能采挖，且生长繁育对土壤和气候有一定要求，由于连作障碍导致栽种过三七的土地至少需要5-10年的休整才能再次种植，在三七的主产区，栽培适生土地正在不断缩小，亟待解决的连作障碍对于环境友好的三七产业可持续发展具有迫切的意义，目前已在云南澜沧等地开展林下种植三七，林下发展种植遵循了药材生长发育规律，又提高了林地利用率，提高药材品质的同时又保护了生态环境。

Panax notoginseng (Araliaceae) is one of the most medicinally important TCM herbs. The rhizome and roots are used to stop or slow down bleeding, it is also used to relieve pain, swelling and blood pressure. It has been recorded as early as 1576, and Shi-Zhen Li stated in his Ben Cao Gang Mu it was used by the military force in South China as an effective vulnerary medicine.

Panax notoginseng was originally a native plant of Guangxi, the nature resource was already over collected during the time from 1821-1850. Later, it was widely cultivated at the border regions of Guangxi with Yunnan. Nowadays, the main production areas are Wenshan and Honghe Districts in Southeast and South Yunnan.  Exact wild population ofPanax notoginseng has never been reported, and it is ranked as extinction in wild (EW) by IUCN.

Some other congeneric species, such as P. ginseng, and P. japonicas are all important herb medicine. Panax is a genus of Araliaceae with a typical intercontinental disjunct distribution in East Asia and North America and it is an important group for systematics and biogeographical studies.

It normally takes three to seven years in cultivation of Panax notoginseng before gathering and much depended on soil and weather condition. After one turn of cultivation the land will not be suitable to grow Panax notoginseng until a rotation of five to ten year. The suitable areas for cultivation are scarce now. In Lancang district of Yunnan, Panax notoginseng is now cultivated in the forests to enhance the medical quality and protect the environment.
